The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program is offering new virtual courses in February and March.

10-hour OSHA General Industry Course — This course is intended to increase workers’ knowledge on hazards they may encounter on a job site and their rights. Training emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention. (An incentive of $175 is available to participants who take this course.)

  • February 7 & 14, 2022 – 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST (five hours per day, must attend both days)

8-hour DOT Hazardous Materials Awareness Course – This course provides the safety awareness, security awareness and in-depth security training required by DOT for hazmat transportation workers. This course also provides OSHA first responder – awareness level training. (An incentive of $175 is available to participants who take this course.)

  • February 24 & March 3, 2022 – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST (four hours per day, must attend both days)

The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program is funded by a federal grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to provide hazmat training to rail workers.

The goal of this training initiative is to provide rail workers with the skills and knowledge necessary to protect themselves, the community, and the environment in a hazardous materials transportation emergency. To achieve this goal, the Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program provides rail workers, through quality hazardous materials training courses, the confidence in their knowledge and problem-solving skills to enable them to make changes for safer work conditions.

Much of the training is provided by peer instructors who are full-time rail workers — members and/or local officers of affiliated rail unions.

In May, the Hazardous Materials Training Program is planning to host two courses virtually:

  1. Disaster Recovery/Response Course (2 hours)
  2. DOT Hazardous Materials Awareness Course (8 hours over two days)

The Disaster Response Recovery course is training for workers and community members who live and work in areas that are likely to be impacted by a hurricane. The course satisfies the requirements to assist workers and communities in recovery from natural and man-made disasters. The class will be conducted May 17, 2021, at noon ET.
The DOT Hazardous Materials Awareness course, also called the Hazardous Materials Transportation Safety and Security Course, provides safety and security awareness training that is required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for hazmat transportation workers. This course also provides OSHA first responder – awareness-level training. The course is intended for railroad workers who are involved in the transportation of hazmat and who may be the first on the scene or the first to witness a release of hazardous materials or be aware of a security threat. Various topics will be addressed during the 8-hour (4 hours per day) course held over two days such as the role of the first responder, federal regulatory agencies, DOT’s regulations on hazmat, recognizing and identifying hazmat in transportation and more (see flyer). The class is being offered May 19 – 20, 2021, and May 24 – 25, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET. An incentive of $175 is available to participants who complete both days of this course.

In April, the Hazardous Materials Training Program is planning to host three courses virtually:

  2. COVID-19 and Infectious Disease Response Awareness Training Course (90 minutes)
  3. DOT Hazardous Materials Awareness Course (8 hours over two days)

The Disaster Response Recovery course is training for workers and community members who live and work in areas that are likely to be impacted by a hurricane. The course satisfies the requirements to assist workers and communities in recovery from natural and man-made disasters. The class will be conducted April 7, 2021, and April 9, 2021, at noon ET on both days.
The COVID-19 and Infectious Disease Response Awareness Training course is designed to increase workers’ knowledge of hazards they may encounter on a job site related to potential occupational exposures to SARS CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. During this 90-minute course, attendees will learn what SARS-CoV-2 is, how it is spread, symptoms, how to protect workers, how to properly clean and disinfect your work area and about vaccinations for COVID-19. The online virtual training will include breakout groups, exercises and demonstrations. This course will be April 16 and April 23, 2021, at 2 p.m. ET on both days.

This training addresses OSHA- and DOT-required training in addition to procedures, different levels of response and worker protection in a hazardous materials emergency or release, weapons of mass destruction awareness and the incident command system. The training also provides completion of the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Outreach requirements and is delivered using interactive classroom instruction, small group activities, hands-on drills and a simulated hazmat response in full safety gear.
Training sessions are scheduled Nov. 11 to 16; Jan. 6 to 11, 2019; Feb. 3 to 8, 2019; and March 17 to 22, 2019, at the Houston Fire Department’s Val Jahnke Training Facility, 8030 Braniff St., Houston, TX 77061. Programs begin Sunday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and conclude Fridays at 1 p.m.
The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program is funded to provide this training by a federal grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The funding provides the following student expenses: air travel, lodging and meals. In addition, an incentive of $175 per day is available to all training participants of these programs, except those who are able to secure regular pay through their employer or are paid union officers. Students may be asked to travel on Saturdays to meet program start times or where substantial reductions in airfare warrant. When registering, please select dates in order of preference.

RW Chemical Emergence Response Training

The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program has scheduled new training programs for HAZMAT/Chemical Emergency Response for 2016. Three classes for RW Chemical Emergence Response are being offered in early 2016 in Houston. The RW Chemical Emergence Response class will be held Feb. 7-12, March 6-11 and April 24-29, 2016.
This training addresses OSHA and DOT required training in addition to procedures, different levels of response and worker protection in a hazardous materials emergency or release, weapons of mass destruction awareness and the incident command system. The training also provides completion of the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Outreach requirements. The programs are delivered using interactive classroom instruction, small group activities, hands-on drills and a simulated HAZMAT response in full safety gear.
The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program is funded to provide this training by a federal grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). This five-day HAZMAT training course will provide rail workers the essential knowledge, skills, and response actions in the case of an unintentional release. These tools will allow rail workers to protect themselves, their co-workers and their communities.
The funding provides the following student expenses: air travel, lodging and meals. In addition, an incentive of $120.00 per day is available to all training participants of these programs, except those who are able to secure regular pay through their employer, or are paid union officers. Training will be conducted at the Houston Fire Department’s Val Jahnke Training Facility, 8030 Braniff Street Houston, TX 77061.
Programs begin Sunday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and conclude Fridays at 1:00 p.m. Students may be asked to travel on Saturdays to meet program start times or where substantial reductions in airfare warrant. When registering, please select dates in order of preference.

Train-the-Trainer Instructor Training

The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program is also offering instructor training to be held April 3-9 and May 15-21, 2016. This course is designed to certify the student as a trainer for the DOT-HMIT (Hazardous Materials Instructor Training) Program.
The topics covered include DOT training requirements, placarding and labeling of Hazardous Materials, as well as other topics related to the safe transportation of hazardous material. Upon completion of this course, the student receives a card certifying them to teach the Practical Training Course.
The Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training Program prides itself on providing the most valuable worker safety training available and peer trainers provide most of the training. A major goal of the Rail Program is to build a nationwide pool of skilled peer trainers to deliver hazardous materials training at their jobsites, union meetings and in their communities.
The DOT-funded HMIT consists of an eight-hour hazardous materials awareness course followed by five days of train-the-trainer instruction, providing participants the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver hazardous materials training at the local and regional levels.
The funding provides the following student expenses: Air travel, lodging and meals. In addition, an incentive of $175.00 per day is available to all training participants of these programs, except those who are able to secure regular pay through their employer, or are paid union officers. Training will be conducted at: Holiday Inn Houston-Hobby Airport, 8611 Airport Blvd, Houston, TX, 77061.
Programs begin Monday mornings and conclude Saturdays at 1:00 p.m.
Students will be required to travel/arrive on Sundays to meet program start times.
