A huge fire outside Baltimore, triggered by the collision of a freight train carrying chemicals and a trash truck, raged for 10 hours before being brought under control, officials said early Wednesday.
A dark, thick plume of smoke could be seen for miles after two of 15 derailed cars from a CSX-owned train caught fire.
A few weeks shy of their respective first quarter earnings announcements East Coast-based Class I railroads Norfolk Southern and CSX are feeling pretty good about their businesses.
Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman stated in the company’s 2012 annual report that the future is promising for the rail carrier, which saw 2012 come in as its second best year ever in its history in terms of revenue at $11 billion, operating income at $3.1 billion, net income at $413 million, and earnings per share at $5.37.
PAULSBORO, N.J. — A signal problem and/or a bridge-locking defect may have been contributing factors in a Conrail bridge collapse and CSX train derailment here Nov. 30. Paulsboro is some 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia.
Some 12,500 gallons of the hazardous material vinyl chloride spilled into a creek from four derailed tank cars. There were no crew injuries. While some 60 of those in the area were treated for respiratory problems, none of the injuries was reported as serious.
News reports quote National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman that there were possible problems with a track signal and/or the swing-bridge locking system.
Hersman said the CSX crew encountered a red signal, although the bridge was not in an open position to permit boat traffic on the creek below to pass. The crew, reporting the conflict, and after visually inspecting the bridge, was given authority by a dispatcher to cross the bridge, Hersman said. According to news reports, the locomotive and five cars had crossed the bridge at 8 mph when it collapsed.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are being assisted by members of the UTU Transportation Safety Team.
This is the second time the swing bridge has collapsed. In 2009, it collapsed causing the derailment of 16 coal cars of a 50-car coal train. It was repaired then and placed back in service.

Union Pacific reported an 18 percent increase in profit for calendar-year 2011 versus calendar-year 2010, citing improvements in “core pricing.”
UP’s calendar-year 2011 operating ratio of 70.7 percent was but one-tenth of one-percent off its record 70.6 percent operating ratio for 2010. WASHINGTON – The U.S. Surface Transportation Board has determined that only one major railroad – Union Pacific – was “revenue adequate” in calendar year 2010.
A railroad is considered “revenue adequate” if it achieves a rate of return on net investment equal to at least the current cost of capital for the railroad industry.
Revenue adequacy determines long-term financial sustainability – the ability to pay investors competitive returns as well as covering the cost of efficient operation, which includes obtaining capital for new equipment; to maintain existing track, bridges, signal systems and other capital assets; and to fund capacity expansion.
For 2010, the STB concluded that the current cost of capital for the railroad industry was 11.03 percent, and only Union Pacific achieved a rate of return equal to or exceeding that percentage. No railroad was found to be “revenue adequate” for calendar year 2009.
For 2010, the STB determined that Union Pacific achieved a rate of return on net investment of 11.54 percent; Norfolk Southern, 10.96 percent; CSX, 10.85 percent; Kansas City Southern, 9.77 percent; BNSF, 9.22 percent; Canadian National U.S. affiliates, 9.21 percent; and Canadian Pacific U.S. affiliates, 8.01 percent.

BOTKINS, Ohio – CSX conductor Dennis A. Hemme, 59, became the ninth UTU member to die in an on-the-job accident in 2011 when he reportedly was crushed to death here Sept. 8 during a mainline shove of a stalled train. Botkins is some 110 miles north of Cincinnati. Hemme, with some six years of service, was a member of UTU Local 14 (Cincinnati) and is survived by his wife and three children. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 15, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Staley-Crowe Funeral Home, 7140 Plainfield Rd., Deer Park, Ohio 45236.
