Memorials to SMART-TD members who died on the job in 2020

KENNETH “BUBBA” CLARK

Clark

Kenneth “Bubba” Clark, a member of Local 577 (Northlake, Ill.) was killed on April 23, 2020, in an accident while working in Proviso, Ill.

Clark, 53, hired out on Nov. 30, 1998, and joined the union in June 1999. A conductor for Union Pacific, he worked in the Chicago Freight Terminal.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle, and daughter, Katelynn.


RYAN J. SANDY

Sandy

Ryan Sandy, 37, a member of Local 662 (Richmond, Va.) and a former local chairperson of LCA-201C, was killed in an on-the-job accident at 2:45 a.m., Monday, Oct. 12 in the Acca Yard in Henrico County, Va.

Sandy had been a member of SMART Transportation Division since February 2009 and worked as a conductor for CSX.

Brother Sandy leaves behind his wife and best friend, Kate; and his children, Jayden, Shannon, Kasen, Jasper and Henry.


PAUL M. PAYNE

Payne

Brother Paul M. Payne of Mount Vernon, Ohio, a member of Local 1397 in Columbus and a father to five children, lost his life in an accident the morning of Nov. 22 at the CSX yard in Fostoria, Ohio.

A conductor for eight years and sergeant in the Ohio Army National Guard, Payne was at work setting out a cut of cars in the yard located in northwest Ohio when he was fatally injured.

“Paul was a dedicated husband, father and son that loved nothing more than spending time with his family,” his family wrote in his obituary.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Haley (Davis) Payne; his children, Shawn, Jacob, Marcus, Lily and Sarah; his mother; sister; and paternal grandmother.


TYRONE DAVIS

Davis

Tyrone Davis, 40, of Local 584 (Meridian, Miss.), passed away the morning of Dec. 23 in Tupelo, Miss., after an on-the-job accident.

Known as “Mr. T” by co-workers, he had been a SMART-TD member since April 2018 and had about 10 years of seniority as a conductor for Kansas City Southern Railroad.

“I trained him — he was a good guy,” Local Chairperson and Secretary & Treasurer Timothy Dallas said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating Brother Davis’s death, which occurred after he was riding a tank car. Brother Davis leaves behind a wife and children.
