Memorials to SMART TD members/trainees who died on the job in 2024

Justin Pender

Justin Pender, 27, a member of Local 577 (Northlake, Ill.) and a Union Pacific conductor, was killed early July 6, 2024 in an on-the-job accident.

Brother Pender died at Proviso Yard in Melrose Park, Ill. The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating his death.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Justin Pender, a Union Pacific Railroad employee who tragically lost his life in a work-related incident. I send my condolences to his family and his colleagues during this difficult time,” posted U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Austin Raysby

Brother Raysby, a valued member of SMART-TD Local 528 in Chicago who worked as a conductor for Union Pacific, was tragically killed while on duty Sept. 4.

Brother Raysby joined SMART-TD in 2012. Known throughout the crew room for his infectious positivity and fun-loving nature, he brought a lightness and camaraderie that was cherished by all who worked alongside him.

In addition to his work family in Local 528, Austin is survived by his loving parents, three siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will remember him for his warmth and kindness.


Joshua Bates

Joshua Bates, who died unexpectedly Sept. 5 from a heart attack while on the job.

Brother Bates was a conductor for Norfolk Southern and joined the union in May 2023.

“Joshua was not only a dedicated railroad brother but also a loving husband to Marie and a devoted father to their three beautiful children,” said Local 496 Secretary and Treasurer Benjamin Etterling. “His sudden passing is a tragedy that no family should endure, and it is during these dark times that we need to rally together.”
