The resolution urges that the Act \u201cshould be administered in a manner that preserves the high-quality health coverage multiemployer plans have provided to union families for decades and, if this is not possible, we demand the ACA be amended by Congress.\u201d It calls for more penalties for employers who cut hours to shirk coverage, curtailing some new taxes and fees applied to union health plans, and extension of tax credits to them. The debate on the resolution stood out for the number of\u00a0General Presidents who personally took the floor to press their case and, more so, for the\u00a0frank comments\u00a0directed at the Obama Administration.<br \/>\nOne of those\u00a0General Presidents was SMART&#8217;s Joseph Nigro who\u00a0warned delegates that &#8220;four years from now, you won&#8217;t be here&#8221; if the legislation&#8217;s move to keep multi-employer plans out of state exchanges goes unchanged.<br \/>\nAt\u00a0the time of the Affordable Care Act&#8217;s passage, President Obama stated\u00a0that union members could keep their insurance under the law,\u00a0 but\u00a0the reality is that the president\u2019s statement to labor in 2009 is simply not\u00a0 true for millions of workers.<br \/>\nAccording to the administration\u2019s analysis of the Affordable Care Act, the law\u00a0 does not provide tax subsidies for the roughly 20 million people covered by\u00a0Taft-Hartlery multiemployer\u00a0plans.\u00a0 This\u00a0interpretation could force\u00a0union members to\u00a0 change their insurance and accept more expensive and perhaps worse coverage in\u00a0 the state-run exchanges while exposing union employers to a significant cost disadvatage as their non-union competition will be subsidized by the state run exchanges.<br \/>\nYou can read more about it in this article from Josh Eidelson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/blog\/176143\/afl-cio-convention-closes-obamacare-critique-and-call-bipartisan-political-action\">here<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0You can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/08\/21\/unions-obamacare-taft-hartley_n_3790548.html\">also read more about the devastating effect of Obamacare on Taft-Hartley plans here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The AFL-CIO closed its latest convention this week by challenging President Obama on the Affordable Care Act, pledging bipartisan politics, and promising to make good on opening up the labor movement to non traditonal forms of organizing and outreach while\u00a0launching campaigns in low density parts of the country that have traditionally been hostile to Labor.
