The $2 billion project is slated to open for the 2024\u20132025 NBA season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/news\/smart-news\/\">SMART\u2019s news team<\/a> toured the project in May 2023 with Local 105 leaders and members working on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Union sheet metal workers help build new LA Clippers arena\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cpJaNBJ6TP4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing all the HVAC,\u201d said Local 105 journeyperson Mike Duran, who is also a Marine Corps veteran and general foreman with Southland Industries on the arena job. \u201cWe\u2019ve got about 1.2 million pounds of ductwork to put in this building. There\u2019s probably about 40 or 50 air handlers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also has two-and-a-half dozen grease scrubbers and more than 7,000 linear feet of grease duct. \u201cYou\u2019ve got hot markets, kitchens, concession stands,\u201d said Duran. \u201cAnything they cook food at, it\u2019ll have a grease hood and it\u2019ll pull the air and filter it and then spit it out of the building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the project was on a \u201cfast track,\u201d with all the different trades and thousands of moving parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think right now there\u2019s 1,100 workers on site. It\u2019s a lot of planning, a lot of logistics to try to make everything and get everything in here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Clippers-arena-drone-shot-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-75690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Clippers-arena-drone-shot-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Clippers-arena-drone-shot-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Clippers-arena-drone-shot-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Clippers-arena-drone-shot-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Clippers-arena-drone-shot-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Clippers-arena-drone-shot.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under a project labor agreement (PLA) negotiated for the job, local hiring has been prioritized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA goal of a project like this, when it was negotiated through the building trades,\u201d said SMART Local 105 Business Manager\/President Steve Hinson, \u201cwas to bring people from the community and give them the opportunity to work on a grand structure like this. And give them the opportunity to learn the craft, to learn a trade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hinson underscored that \u201cPLAs have been proven to bring jobs in, using good union labor, on-time and under budget.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got an awesome team out here,\u201d said Duran, \u201cand we all work together for the same goal \u2014 to get everything done safely and effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duran has been in the sheet metal industry since 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came from Local 16 up in Portland,\u201d he said. \u201cMy brother worked there and he got me in the trade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After apprenticing, Duran joined the Marines, serving for four years \u2014 including two tours of duty in Iraq. After leaving the military, he worked for a company providing personal security services in Iraq. He then moved down to southern California, met his wife and got married, and got back into the sheet metal industry with SMART Local 105. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor somebody that\u2019s coming out of the military,\u201d he added, \u201cthat wants to work with their hands and build something, the trades are a great place to go. You can get in, make a good wage, good benefits, provide for your family and be successful. Out of all the trades, I think sheet metal is one of the best ones.
