{"id":44531,"date":"2018-08-03T14:24:45","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T18:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/?p=44531"},"modified":"2018-08-03T14:24:45","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T18:24:45","slug":"congress-considering-allowing-single-piloted-planes-on-all-cargo-flights-pilots-outraged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/congress-considering-allowing-single-piloted-planes-on-all-cargo-flights-pilots-outraged\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress considering allowing single-piloted planes on all-cargo flights, pilots outraged","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a move that has infuriated pilots and their unions, Congress has included allocations for research and implementation of single-piloted all-cargo flights into H.R. 4, the FAA reauthorization funding bill now under consideration.<br \/>\nSection 744 of the bill establishes a \u201cresearch and development program in support of single-piloted cargo aircraft assisted with remote piloting and computer piloting\u201d in conjunction with NASA and other relevant agencies.<br \/>\nOn Aug. 1, unions representing the pilots of nearly 50 commercial airlines joined together at the 64<sup>th<\/sup> Air Safety Forum hosted by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int\u2019l (ALPA) to express their opposition of what they\u2019re calling a \u201cdangerous set of provisions\u201d added to the FAA reauthorization bill.<br \/>\n\u201cALPA adamantly opposes FAA Reauthorization Section 744 and will continue to use every resource we have to ensure that this anti-safety provision is not enacted,\u201d wrote ALPA President Captain Tim Canoll in a <a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/swapa\/assets\/pdf\/Press_Releases\/Sec_744_Joint_Pilot_Alliance_Release_Final_073118.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint press release<\/a> with six other unions.<br \/>\n&#8220;Cargo and passenger carriers operate the same high-performance jet aircraft, share the same congested airspace, and fly over the same densely populated areas. There&#8217;s no logical reason to apply different\u00a0standards to each,&#8221; wrote Capt. Dan Carey, president of the Allied Pilots Association (APA), in the same release.<br \/>\nH.R. 4 passed in the House of Representatives 393 \u2013 13 on April 27.
