{"id":23908,"date":"2014-08-11T09:51:52","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T14:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/?p=23908"},"modified":"2014-08-11T09:51:52","modified_gmt":"2014-08-11T14:51:52","slug":"first-smart-general-convention-forges-a-united-tomorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/first-smart-general-convention-forges-a-united-tomorrow\/","title":{"rendered":"First SMART General Convention Forges a United Tomorrow","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/COX_3674.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-23910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smart-union.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/COX_3674-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"COX_3674\" \/><\/a>In their First General Convention, held August 11 \u2013 15, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers will bring\u00a0together delegates from across North America to determine the course of the\u00a0union through the next five years and beyond.<br \/>\nOver the course of the convention, delegates and committee members will meet and vote to ratify and finalize a new SMART Constitution, to elect a slate of officers, and to discuss reports on topics relevant to the industries and professions represented by SMART.<br \/>\nGuest speakers at the convention are set to include AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, President Sean McGarvey of North America\u2019s Building Trades Unions, Nevada AFL-CIO Executive Secretary-Treasurer Danny Thompson, Southern Nevada AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Council Secretary-Treasurer Darren Enns, and Fred Myers of the Union Sportsmen\u2019s Alliance. \u00a0SMART General President Joe Nigro and Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors\u2019 National Association President Randy Novak are also slated to address the delegates.<br \/>\nThe First SMART General Convention is also notable for its use of electronic voting and the use of e-readers to distribute convention daily news to all delegates. This green approach to convention communication falls directly in line with SMART members\u2019 participation in green technologies on the job\u2014through innovative HVAC practices and energy efficiency along with daily work in transportation systems (like rail and mass transit) that reduce greenhouse emissions and our dependence on foreign oil.<br \/>\nThe International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, is one of North America\u2019s most dynamic and diverse unions with 216,000 members.
