Carl Cochran heads SMART TD Alumni Assocation

Carl Cochran, retired former Florida state legislative director, is the SMART TD Alumni Association national coordinator.

Brother Cochran, a member of Local 1138 in Miami, Fla., retired at age 65 in February 2005.

“Having worked in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., I know SMART TD needs we retirees as part of the team,” said Cochran. “Our involvement for ourselves is just as important as the role we can play in helping active members — and that helps us by keeping our pensions solvent!”

“The local chapters of the Alumni Association that meet regularly are very important to retirees,” he said. “They give us a chance to stay in touch with each other and lend a hand when needed.”

Cochran started his career in 1958 at the Jacksonville (Fla.) Terminal Company and went to the Seaboard Coast Line (now CSXT) in 1963. He held a number of local offices and became alternate state legislative director in 1980. He moved up to state legislative director in 1988, holding the post until he retired. Along the way, he helped organize the commuter rail operations at Tri-Rail, as well as the re-entry into the UTU (now SMART TD) of the Florida East Coast Railway and the Wisconsin Central.

He and his wife Karon have two daughters, Tammy and Bobi-Jo.
