Job Bank
The SMART Sheet Metal Job Bank compiles job postings from local unions across the United States. If you are currently looking for work and willing to travel to the jurisdiction of other local unions to work, please contact the Local 48 office.
SMOHIT
The Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) Inc. was founded in 1986 to address the impact of decades-long asbestos exposure on those working in the sheet metal industry. To date, tens of thousands of union sheet metal workers have been screened as part of its Health Screening Research Program (formerly Asbestos Screening). SMOHIT has since expanded its mission to operate on four separate but related tracks: monitor and document the health of union sheet metal workers related to workplace exposures and hazards; provide safety information and training to promote best practices on and off the job; advocate for the physical, mental and emotional health and safety of SMART members with government and through like-minded allied organizations; and provide diet, exercise and other lifestyle information to address the health and wellness of union members and contractors.
SMART MAP
The SMART Members Assistance program (MAP) is an education, awareness and membership action program for those dealing with problems associated with mental health issues. Focusing on substance use disorder and suicide prevention, SMART MAP educates union members on those primary issues, as well as employee assistance programs, ethics, confidentiality and self-care practices.
SMART MAP mentors are compassionate, empathetic and well-respected union members who continue to support their peers when they return to work.
If you or anyone you know needs assistance, know that SMART members can receive free and confidential assistance through our helpline at (877) 884-6227.
Union EAP
In addition to SMART MAP, Local 48 members have access to an employee assistance program called Union EAP, dedicated to improving the lives of union members by partnering to address mental health, substance use, financial, and legal challenges. Union EAP’s national network of centrally managed care coordinators offers prevention education, responds to emergent crises, and helps members and their families access a comprehensive variety of high-quality services.
TOOTRiS Childcare Benefit
SMART is now offering new childcare benefits through TOOTRiS, a platform and concierge service that helps you quickly find, schedule, enroll and pay for care to fit the needs of your family.
National Pension Fund
The Sheet Metal Workers’ National Pension Fund is SMART members’ defined-benefit pension fund. Funding for the NPF comes entirely from contributions remitted by contributing employers and investment earnings; SMART members who are vested in the pension earn a non-forfeitable right to a pension at normal retirement age (65).
SASMI
SASMI stands for Stabilization Agreement of the Sheet Metal Industry. The trust fund was originally designed to assist sheet metal workers during periods of unemployment or underemployment — and that’s still the case — but over the years, it has expanded to include even more benefits for members. SASMI was established more than 50 years ago and has always been funded through employer contributions.
