Our union is only as strong as our membership! The more active Local 48 members are in their union, the more effective Local 48 can be when bargaining strong contracts, organizing new contractors and winning more work for members. From community service projects to local committees, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.
SMART Army
The Local 48 SMART Army is a key vehicle for engaging in our communities, raising the visibility of our union and highlighting the important work that Local 48 members do, as well as the essential services we provide. It is also a great way to improve our image among our neighbors, community leaders and politicians whose support we count on to back new union-built projects, community benefits agreements/project labor agreements and the high workplace and training standards that are the foundation of the good, union jobs that support our families and entire communities. Through the SMART Army, Local 48 members volunteer at community service events, advocate for fellow members and more.
Local Committees
One of the easiest and most powerful ways to get involved in Local 48 is by serving on one of our local committees. Attend a union meeting or contact your local office for more information.
Union Meetings
By far the easiest way to get involved — and one of the most important — is to attend your local union meetings! Union meetings are where members and officers collectively decide how union funds are used, vote on local officer positions, discuss collective bargaining agreements, propose community service projects and much more. Union meetings take place every second Friday of the month at the Birmingham, Alabama, and Rogersville, Alabama, locations at 7 p.m.
