SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, is one of North America’s most dynamic and diverse unions with 203,000 members. SMART’s members produce and provide the vital services that move products to market, passengers to their destinations and ensure the quality of the air we breathe.

We are sheet metal workers, service technicians, bus operators, engineers, conductors, sign workers, welders, production employees and more. With members in scores of different occupations, we advocate for fairness in the workplace, excellence at work and opportunity for all working families.

To schedule an interview, please contact Paul Pimentel at ppimentel@smart-union.org or Michael Blain (mblain@smart-union.org) regarding issues affecting the sheet metal, construction, shipyard, production or sign industries.

Please contact Ben Nagy at bnagy@smart-union.org for issues revolving around the transportation industry.

Regarding transportation accidents:
Members of SMART Transportation Division’s National Safety Team (NST) respond to accident scenes and work with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and other investigators to help determine probable cause of accidents and to make appropriate safety recommendations at the conclusion of the investigation.

SMART TD has a Party Status agreement with NTSB that makes that federal agency the chief source of information for accident probes involving trains. Because of this, neither the union nor its representatives will make any official comments as to the status of accident investigations or the events leading up to accidents. All media inquiries should be directed to the NTSB, which will provide details about the accident and the investigation. Any comment on an accident investigation from current or former members sought by and made to the media does not speak for the union or its membership. To learn more about SMART, download our press kit here.
